Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour – West Side Story
From Phantom of the Opera to Madama Butterfly, Handa Opera has been serving jaw-dropping theatre spectacles for the last 10 years. The productions combine over-the-top set design, stunning costumes, and elaborate song and dance sequences with skyline views, themed food and drink and an over-water stage for a theatrical experience for the books.
With the 2024 production, Handa Opera brings back all the drama, music and dance that the musical has become known for. Composer Leonard Bernstein’s score with lyrics by Steven Sondheim will come alive on stage in this glittering production by Francesca Zambello.
West Side Story first made its entry on Broadway in 1957 eventually becoming one of the most successful musicals of all time. Based on the Shakespearean tale of Romeo and Juliet, the musical tells the story of two teenage gangs, Sharks and Jets, who fight for control of the Upper West Side. Tensions escalate when a gang member falls in love with a rival’s sister.
West Side Story returns to Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour from March 22 to April 21, 2024. Tickets will be available to purchase from October 5. Join the waitlist here.
