It doesn’t get as glitzy and extravagant as Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour. Opera Australia takes a harbourside setting, unrivalled skyline views, nightly fireworks and world-class opera performances and combines it all for a stunning visual feast. Previous years have seen dreamy productions of La Traviata, Carmen, Turandot, West Side Story and most recently The Phantom of the Opera take the city by storm. Handa Opera’s latest production, Madama Butterfly is set to make a dazzling return to Mrs Macquaries Point later this month.
Madama Butterfly on Sydney Harbour
When it comes to live entertainment, it’s hard to beat an Opera show by the harbour. Madama Butterfly opened in the city back in 2014 in a dazzling spectacle that received much acclaim so naturally, it’s being brought back for an encore season.
“This production of Madama Butterfly by Spanish Director Alex Ollè is one of the most beautiful operas we’ve performed on the Harbour, so we’re thrilled to be giving people another opportunity to see it in 2023,” Opera Australia Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini AM said.
You’ll also find food and drink options aplenty, nightly fireworks and an over-water location that’s hard to beat. And even if you’re not a huge fan of Opera per se, it’s still well worth a visit for the overall experience alone.
Puccini’s Madama Butterfly is often regarded as one of the world’s most beloved operas. Based on the same tale as musical Miss Saigon, the show will include haunting melodies like Un bel dì vedremo (One Beautiful Day) and The Humming Chorus.
Opera Australia’s Madama Butterfly production comes to Sydney in March and April, 2023. Grab your tickets here.
