From a mirrored maze featuring a groovy dance party to an infinity room chock full of Gucci bags — Gucci’s immersive new exhibition is a sensory delight. Dubbed Gucci Garden Archetypes, this fantastic travelling exhibition has made waves in Shanghai, Taipei, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Seoul before opening in Sydney last week. Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the legendary Italian House, the exhibition brings some of Gucci’s most unforgettable campaigns to Sydney in a larger-than-life showcase.
Gucci Garden Archetypes
Split into a number of immersive and themed sections, the exhibition recreates Gucci’s most pioneering advertising campaigns envisioned by the creative director and curator of the exhibition, Alessandro Michele.
You’ll first pass a huge space flushed pink from top to bottom featuring Gucci’s watchful eye before getting ushered into a room filled with screens, each depicting the campaigns that Michele has brought to life at Gucci.
Next, find yourself in the midst of ‘Gucci Bloom’ — an imaginary garden enveloped in heady floral scents and a single floral couch in a callback to the 2017 Gucci Bloom commercial, which starred actor Dakota Johnson.
One of the most exciting aspects of the exhibition is the incredibly Instagrammable room filled with hundreds of cuckoo clocks, stuffed toys, ceramics and Marmont handbags from top to bottom.
Other notable aspects of the exhibition include an 80s nightclub bathroom of the Berlin-set Spring Summer 2016 campaign, a graffiti wall — an ode to the student uprisings of May 1968 in Paris and an LA subway carriage from the Fall Winter 2015 campaign. There’s also a mirrored maze with a dance party on loop encapsulating the energy and vibe of the Cruise 2016 campaign. At the end of the exhibition, visitors will find a Gucci shop filled with an assortment of inventory and a collection of images and surprises.
