Tucked within the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden Mount Tomah spans 234 hectares of verdant landscapes, yet remains relatively under-the-radar. As Australia’s highest botanic garden, it’s the perfect spot for a day trip or weekend escape in autumn with vibrant Japanese maples, thriving basalt forests, and an array of cool-climate plants on full display. Another reason to plan a trip: it’s secretly welcomed a new forest boardwalk trail with lookouts and incredible wilderness to immerse yourself in. The new trail winds through a dense forest and tree canopies with views stretching all the way to Parramatta and Sydney.
Forest Boardwalk, Blue Mountains Botanic Garden Mount Tomah
Thousands of plants in their natural habitat adorn the 28-hectare garden, and now, a short but sweet boardwalk trail winds through the treetops, surrounded by generous plantings of maples, camellias, rhododendrons, and ferns that beautifully enhance the natural environment.
As you walk along the boardwalk, you’ll find art panels that explain the fern life cycle, connected to the local heritage of the area — “Tomah” means “tree-fern” in the Durgah language. The forest boardwalk is thoughtfully designed, using a colour palette and natural materials that enhance and blend seamlessly with nature.
Even better? The low-impact trail is fully accessible, so wheelchair users, parents with strollers, and those with reduced mobility can all experience the beautiful location and equally beautiful views.
Wondering how to get there? The botanic gardens are less than a two-hour drive from Sydney with a delightful showcase of local and imported cool climate plants and alpine rainforest. Find more information about the forest boardwalk and the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden Mount Tomah here.
