
Summer may be drawing to a close but plenty of places around NSW are actually at their best this time of the year. The weather is more palatable than in the height of summer, the giddy crowds are slowly beginning to thin and the sun remains strong enough for water activities and outdoor adventures. Elsewhere, the crisp pre-autumn atmosphere is settling in and the coastline still remains just as seductive as peak summer. While we’re approaching the tail end of summer, there is still time to plan one last getaway before the autumn routine takes over. Here are some of our top end-of-summer trips around NSW.
1. Brunswick Heads
Touted as the next Byron Bay, Brunswick Heads offers everything its iconic neighbour does minus the crowds. Crystal clear, blue water beaches, pictures-perfect coastal scenery, quality cafes and restaurants with water views, and boutique shopping are on offer in this beautiful far North Coast destination. 2. Hat Head
Hat Head doesn’t have much to offer in terms of luxury or everyday comforts save for a few small shops but it more than makes up for it with unspoilt natural beauty and glassy pale blue waters perfect for a dip. Must-do activities here include swimming and snorkelling in the picturesque Korogoro Creek, camping on the beach, exploring a serene coastal trail and enjoying delicious fish and chips at Captain Salty. 3. Seal Rocks
Much like Hat Head, Seal Rocks is the place to go if you’re looking for some peace and quiet, but don’t expect luxury hotels or high-rise buildings here. The tranquil coastal village is home to the historic Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse, wild and beautiful beaches without the crowds, cosy caravan parks and cabins including dog-friendly spots. It’s just a stone’s throw from the beautiful Myall Lakes National Park which is perfect for walking, kayaking, and stargazing. 4. South West Rocks
South West Rocks on the Mid-North Coast of NSW is the quintessential summer getaway with plenty on offer for all types of travellers. You’ll find a dozen lovely beaches to explore here and if the water is too chilly for your liking, make a beeline for one of its historical attractions like the Trial Bay Gaol or browse its quality boutiques and markets. If you’re an adventure lover, South West Rocks is home to Australia’s premier shark and cave dive where you can swim alongside grey nurse sharks and schools of hammerhead sharks. 5. Crescent Head
An underrated coastal gem, Crescent Head is the place to be if you’re a surfer and looking to catch a wave before summer ends. Oozing with natural beauty and a relaxed, retro vibe the village also offers national parks, walking trails and clear blue waters for snorkelling. The seemingly never-ending Killick Beach is the premier spot for surfing with 14km of pristine white sand. If you prefer to stay on land, you’ll find plenty of charming cafes and boutiques to shop at or enjoy local food with a side of coastal views.

6. Pambula
The historic village of Pambula is nestled between the coastal towns of Merimbula and Eden and offers the perfect dose of history and coastal offerings. Walk down its main street and admire the beautiful colonial architecture or stroll the relaxing Pambula River Walking Track which offers excellent birdwatching and tranquil views of Severs Beach and Pambula River. Pambula Beach is an excellent spot for surfing and you can’t miss an oyster tour if you’re visiting.
