Following trails to pristine swimming holes and cascading waterfalls is a favourite pastime for Sydneysiders. But the sweltering heat can make the prospect of hiking a lot less appealing. Fortunately, there are plenty of picturesque waterfalls near Sydney that are not only easy to access via a short walk or drive but some are also swimmable. Nestled amidst lush rainforest, with cool, sparkling waters, and dappled in beautiful summer light, these natural wonders are the perfect summer adventure and they don’t look too bad on the gram either.
1. Upper Gledhill Falls
Upper Gledhill Falls in the Northern Beaches might be one of Sydney’s best-hidden gems and a true sight for sore eyes. This small waterfall cascades into an emerald-hued swimming hole surrounded by lush bushland. While it would appear like the falls are located somewhere deep in the woods, they are actually just a few steps from the main road, more of a leisurely stroll than a hike. 2. Wattamolla Falls
Wattamolla Falls packs a lot of adventure into one spot. Here you will find a waterfall that cascades into a perfect swimming lagoon, with stunning coastal bushland views to boot. It’s also an underrated snorkelling spot, with a stellar underwater landscape to explore. But the best part might just be its accessibility. The falls are incredibly easy to reach, just a 5-minute walk from the carpark and picnic area making it a family favourite, and an excellent day trip idea from Sydney.
3. Madden Falls
Madden Falls in the Dharawal National Park often flies under the radar, but that’s part of its charm. Enjoy an easy and reasonably flat walk to the lookout and be treated to a gorgeous view of the waterfall as it cascades from Maddens Creek into the pools below. Birdwatching, native wildlife, seasonal blooms, and a picnic area are also on offer, just a 90-minute drive from Sydney. While swimming is not recommended here, the falls are particularly pleasant to visit rainfall with a natural viewing platform that offers a close-up look. 4. Wentworth Falls
Wentworth Falls in the Katoomba area of the Blue Mountains needs no introduction. One of the most recognisable and photographed falls in Australia, this scenic spot is accessible via a paved, easy-to-moderate walking track, just a 1.5-hour drive from Sydney. The Wentworth Falls Lookout offers a gorgeous view of the falls as it plunges into the valley, accessible via a gently sloping path. Along the way, you’ll enjoy stunning valley views, crisp mountain air, and shaded areas to take refuge in if the sun is too bright.
5. Minnehaha Falls
A classic Blue Mountains gem, the Minnehaha Falls comes with a chilly swimming hole. The walk up to the falls is around 45 minutes but one of the easier tracks in the Blue Mountains and conveniently starts at the carpark. Do note, that some sections are uneven and the walk is not pram or wheelchair accessible. Don’t forget to budget some extra time for a dreamy swim. The falls can be quite busy in summer so try and get there early to get it all to yourself.
6. Collins Flat Beach
Sydney’s Collins Flat Beach is one of its best-kept secrets. Almost tropical in appearance, it’s the only harbour beach that has its own waterfall and you can dip your toes at the base of the falls. The waterfall is sometimes a trickle so plan your visit after a day of rain to see it in full flow. Located just a 15-minute walk from the Manly Wharf, the beach provides a lovely reprieve from the summer heat with shaded spots, dense forests and calm waters.
