NSW is home to scores of cascades with perfectly swimmable pools but there’s something extra special about chasing waterfalls when you can splash around in your private watering hole. If a refreshing swim is on your mind as the mercury rises, we’ve got just the spot for you. Nestled within the expansive Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, you’ll find a beautiful hidden gem that’s still flying under the radar and it may be Sydney’s best-hidden waterfall. Surrounded by lush forest, the Upper Gledhill Falls pours gracefully into a crystal-clear, emerald-tinted swimming hole, made for your Instagram feed. Even better, it’s less than an hour from Sydney, with just a short walk from the carpark to the falls—making it a pleasantly accessible spot for a quick escape.
Upper Gledhill Falls
Upper Gledhill Falls offers the perfect wild swimming experience. The waterfall’s flow is not too heavy but can become strong after a day of rain and the deep pool at its base has largely rock-free waters you can comfortably swim in. The cliff walls around the falls provide a distinct sense of isolation, giving it a natural enclosure even though it’s just below the road.
Budding photographers will love this Instagram-worthy spot. When the sun is out and the light is just right, the pool takes on a lovely green hue but once you’re in, you’ll see the water is clear and inviting. If you’re not in the mood for a swim, you can simply pack a hamper and kick back on the rocks near the waterfall, enjoying the views. This freshwater swimming hole near Sydney is a true hidden gem, surprisingly unspoiled despite being so close to the city.
Is there parking at Upper Gledhill Falls?
For parking, drive up McCarr’s Creek Rd from the Pittwater end and park across from the Duck Holes walking track. From there, it’s a brief 100-meter walk down to the swimming hole. Although convenient, do bear in mind that parking only has space for 2-3 cars. You may need to look for alternative parking spots in the area and then walk to the waterfall.
What is the best time to visit?
Summer is the perfect time to visit the falls for a leisurely swim. The water is refreshingly cool without being freezing, offering a pleasant dip on hot days. However, the warmer months can attract more visitors; for a chance to get the pool to yourself, visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon when crowds are thinner. It’s also best visited after a day of rain — this is when the waterfall flows with extra force offering an even prettier display.
Accessibility
The trail down to the falls is not official or signposted. While the walk to the waterfall is short and easy, there is a bit of rock climbing involved, so be prepared for a bit of a challenge, but that’s part of the adventure.
How to get there?
Upper Gledhill Falls is about a 40-minute drive from Sydney CBD, or just 17 minutes from Frenchs Forest.
