If you’re already dreaming of an idyllic beach escape this summer, we’ve got a local spot that deserves your attention. Caves Beach, on the Swansea peninsula between Lake Macquarie and the Pacific Ocean, is one of the best beaches in the Lake Macquarie area with rock pools, caves and soft white sand. Popular for its dramatic coastline and namesake caves, Caves Beach is located less than two hours from Sydney. It’s an ideal spot for families with BBQ facilities, picnic areas and opportunities for cave exploration at low tide.
Caves Beach, Lake Macquarie
While we love Sydney’s beaches, they can be overrun by crowds. If you’re after a quieter yet unique experience, this serene stretch of land and picturesque caves, is well worth your attention.
It’s worth noting that the caves are best explored at low tide as high tide can submerge the entrance of the caves with crashing waves, making them unsafe to enter. To avoid disappointment, you can check tide times on the Bureau of Meteorology website. You can also find current surf conditions here.
Things to do at Caves Beach
You’ll find a series of caves, archways, and chambers here and they’re totally Instagram-worthy so don’t forget your camera. Although the caves are the main draw, there are plenty of other things to do at the beach including swimming and surfing and enjoying a picnic with a view. For stunning coastal views of the beach and beyond, make your way to the Caves Beach Lookout. Plus, explore tidal pools and dunes and if you want a spot all to yourself, take a short stroll north to Hams Beach.
What are the facilities at the beach?
The beach offers convenient amenities such as a café, picnic tables, barbecues, toilets, showers, and the Surf Life Saving Club. The beach is also patrolled during the school holidays from September to April.
What is the best time to visit the beach?
The beach can be visited any time of the year, though it’s important to keep an eye on tide times. Summer is a great time to visit for a leisurely dip but bear in mind that weekends can be a little busy.
Can I easily access the caves?
There are a variety of caves at the beach with different sizes. Some are too narrow and should be entered with care but most are easily accessible.
