As Western Sydney’s population continues to grow, so too does the demand for modern public spaces where locals can exercise, cool off and spend time with family. In recent years, major projects such as Penrith Beach and the Parramatta Aquatic Centre have transformed the region’s recreational offering, giving communities more places to swim and stay active. Now, another long-awaited project is edging closer to completion, with the Canterbury Leisure and Aquatic Centre reaching a major construction milestone this week. Once complete, the multi-million-dollar facility will deliver a major new aquatic and wellness hub for Sydney’s south-west. Here’s what we know so far.
Canterbury Leisure & Aquatic Centre: Olympic-sized pool now being filled
Construction of the new centre has entered one of its most significant phases, with the facility’s 50-metre outdoor swimming pool now being filled for the first time. The Olympic-sized pool will hold around 1.7 million litres of water and is expected to take about a week to completely fill, marking a major step forward for the long-awaited project.
According to Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek, the milestone brings the community one step closer to enjoying a state-of-the-art recreation facility that has been years in the making. The outdoor pool has been designed with accessibility in mind and will feature a pool hoist and bariatric chair, while a movable swim wall will allow the space to be divided into two separate 25-metre pools to accommodate everything from lap swimming and lessons to training and community programs.
Designed as a full-scale aquatic and wellness hub, the centre will also feature a heated indoor pool, a warm-water program pool, a children’s splash play area, two fitness studios and a fully equipped gym. There will also be an on-site sauna, giving locals another spot to unwind and recover after a swim or workout.
