One of Sydney’s most anticipated new swimming spots is taking shape, with work now underway on the Callan Park Tidal Baths ahead of their expected opening this summer. Set along the Iron Cove foreshore in the Inner West, the new swimming spot will give locals and visitors another place to cool off while making the most of the Parramatta River. It’s part of a wider transformation of Callan Park that will also open up more public green space, breathing new life into one of Sydney’s most popular waterfront parklands. The precinct attracts millions of visitors each year, and the long-awaited project is set to become a major new drawcard for swimmers, walkers and families alike. Here’s everything you need to know.
Callan Park Tidal Baths
The new tidal baths will sit on the Iron Cove foreshore alongside the popular Bay Run, creating a purpose-built place for swimming on the Parramatta River. Plans include a fixed new jetty, a pontoon for relaxing and water access, an accessible pathway and ramp, and a shark net that will create a safer place to swim. Located close to Leichhardt Oval and King George Park, the site will be easy to reach for the millions of walkers, runners, cyclists and families who already spend time in the area each year.
“The new tidal bath and return of 1.6 hectares or the equivalent of 4000 large picnic blankets of green open space to the community will mean more people can enjoy this great parkland,” Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said.
The project is part of a broader upgrade of Callan Park. It will return 1.6 hectares of additional green open space to the community. Crews are demolishing nine long-vacant buildings to make way for the equivalent of around two football fields of parkland. This will reopen spaces that have been closed off for years. The NSW Government and Inner West Council are jointly investing $8.6 million in the redevelopment. The tidal baths are expected to welcome their first swimmers in time for summer.
