One of NSW’s most scenic heritage rail journeys is set to steam along the South Coast again next month, offering passengers the chance to swap modern commuter trains for a nostalgic day trip aboard a beautifully restored vintage train. The Kiama Picnic Train will depart on two remaining dates for its winter run in August, winding past one of the state’s most spectacular coastal routes through the Royal National Park before arriving in Kiama. From here, passengers will have several hours to explore the town’s beautiful beaches, waterside cafes and natural wonders including the famous blowhole before boarding the return journey to Sydney. What to expect aboard the Kiama Picnic Train
The Kiama Picnic Train is hauled by heritage steam locomotive 5917, which first entered service with the NSW Government Railways in 1953, adding to the nostalgic feel of the journey. Passengers can choose from a range of seating options, including private compartments, four-seat booths and air-conditioned lounge cars, while those looking to make the trip extra special can book a seat in the First Class dining car for a high tea experience served during the journey.
The highlight is the route itself, travelling through the Royal National Park before hugging the Illawarra coastline on its way south. The heritage carriages offer uninterrupted views of the changing scenery, from dense bushland and sandstone escarpments to glittering coastline overlooking the Pacific Ocean. After arriving in Kiama around lunchtime, passengers are free to spend several hours exploring at their own pace before the return journey. You can stroll to the famous Kiama Blowhole, relax by the beach, browse local boutiques or settle in for lunch at one of the town’s many cafes and restaurants. If you’re travelling on August 16, you’ll also have the chance to explore the popular Kiama Seaside Markets before boarding the train home.
