The Western Sydney International Airport is tentatively expected to open its doors in 2026 but that’s not the only ambitious project that the NSW government is undertaking in Sydney’s west. Connecting directly to the airport will be Bradfield City Centre — Australia’s newest city and the first to be built in over 100 years. The billion-dollar project is going to be one of the largest urban developments ever undertaken in the country with the ultimate goal of creating a “beautiful and sustainable city” for 22nd-century Australia. Located in the heart of the new Badgery’s Creek airport (or the Western Sydney Aerotropolis), this will be Sydney’s third city, with Parramatta and Sydney CBD being the other two major hubs.
Bradfield City Centre, Sydney
Among its many impressive features is the fact that Bradfield City Centre will be a “30-minute city” which essentially means that you can hop on public transport and access everything the CBD has to offer within 30 minutes. Spread across 144 acres, it is set to be five times the size of Barangaroo and includes several commercial and community facilities including retail, cultural hubs, and sprawling green spaces. With a focus on “digitally-led, cyber smart developments,” the city promises to be a prime destination for tourism and entertainment.
Sustainability will be at the heart of the new project with a strong focus on environmental design and heat reduction — Western Sydney is typically 6-10°C hotter than the rest of the city on extremely hot days making it one of the most impacted regions in Australia during summer.
Additionally, Bradfield City will have car-free streets while being connected to world-class transport further promoting its sustainable vision. The visionary project is expected to generate 200,000 jobs in Western Parkland City. Although the first few buildings could open in time to coincide with the new airport, the overall city will take up to 50 years to grow. The Bradfield City Centre Master Plan is now open for community feedback so you can find more details and have your say on the Western Parkland City Authority website.
