With only a few days of summer remaining, the window for a final sun-soaked escape is closing. Luckily for us, the stretch of turquoise coastline within a few hours of Sydney is packed with towns that are tailor-made for a last-minute getaway without a lot of effort, with crystal clear waters perfect for swimming and snorkelling, reliable surf, decent coffee, and unfussy seaside charm in spades. If you’re keen to squeeze in one more coastal drive before autumn arrives, these towns are our picks for a final, low-stress summer road trip.

Skip the crowds and tourist bustle of Kiama for its quieter and equally picturesque neighbour, Gerringong. Just ten minutes further south, this hilltop village is enveloped in rolling hills and dramatic views of the Pacific. The main draw is the spectacular Werri Beach, an excellent surfing and swimming spot that feels surprisingly tranquil even in summer. At the southern end, you’ll find the popular Ourie Pool, ideal for a leisurely swim. Tasman Drive in Gerringong is touted as one of the most scenic coastal drives in the state while Fern Street is the charming main strip where you’ll find a variety of coastal cafes, trendy boutiques and more.

Skip the longer North Coast drives and head straight to Huskisson, the perfect gateway to Jervis Bay. Boasting some of the whitest sand in Australia, this chic coastal town offers glittering Caribbean-blue waters, wild coastal trails and plenty of wildlife experiences, just a short drive from Sydney. Highlights include the nearby Booderee National Park, a sunset drink at Huskisson Hotel with a side of stunning ocean views, the spectacular White Sands Walk that leads towards the world-famous Hyams Beach, outdoor cafes and more.

A classic Mid North Coast favourite, Forster is the ideal end-of-summer road trip from Sydney, framed by ocean on one side and Wallis Lake on the other. This action-packed summer getaway delivers a string of pristine beaches, charming markets, a vibrant main street, and plenty of fun in the sun. One Mile Beach is the go-to for world-class swells, powder white sand and sand dunes, while the heritage-listed Forster Ocean Baths offer a calmer option right by the shoreline. The Bicentennial Walk is a standout coastal trail by the water linking the coast, beaches, lookouts and rocky headlands in one easy, scenic stretch.

Tucked away about three hours from Sydney, Seal Rocks is the place to go for rugged coastal scenery, wild beaches and snorkelling and diving experiences. Anchored by its beautiful Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse, the sleepy village offers plenty of seclusion compared to its busier counterparts like Pacific Palms. The main draw is Number One Beach, a sheltered, north-facing stretch perfect for a final summer swim. The town also offers wild coastal trails, whale watching in winter, and the nearby Myall Lakes National Park for more outdoor adventures.
Mollymook

Just a few minutes from Ulladulla, Mollymook delivers a stylish take on the quintessential South Coast escape, with a 2km stretch of golden sand and the Bogey Hole, a large, sheltered rock pool at the southern headland, with glittering blue waters ideal for swimming and snorkelling at low tide. Despite its size, the town packs a punch with its food offerings; you’ve got Rick Stein’s at Bannisters for a polished seafood lunch and Gwylo for a flavourful, Asian-fusion vibe. Meanwhile, the Mollymook Golf Club serves up sweeping coastal views alongside one of the most scenic courses in the region.

It’s the furthest drive on the list at nearly five hours, but for those with a long weekend and a bit of motivation, South West Rocks is arguably the most rewarding. This Mid North Coast town blends vivid turquoise water with dramatic coastal scenery, gorgeous beaches and world-class diving at Fish Rock Cave, a 125-metre underwater tunnel teeming with grey nurse sharks. You can spend a morning exploring the old Trial Bay Gaol ruins or head to Horseshoe Bay for a swim in a protected, family-friendly cove. It’s a long-haul from Sydney, but well worth the drive.
