Sydney’s Bate Bay secures the crown as Australia’s premier beach destination for 2026. Beach authority Brad Farmer AM evaluated over 12,500 coastal spots using a rigorous 130-point checklist, spotlighting this Sutherland Shire gem for its pristine sands and community spirit.
Bate Bay Triumphs
A cluster of nine beaches in Bate Bay—stretching from Greenhills’ vast 4.8km undeveloped sands through Wanda, Elouera (Sydney’s longest), Cronulla and Oak Park, plus four ocean pools and Gunnamatta Bay—dominated the rankings.
Bate bay offers scenic coastal walks, clear waters and is a hub for swimming, snorkelling and fishing. The spot is ideal for calmer, family-friendly swimming on golden sand.
Farmer praises their golden shores and vibrant yet accessible vibe, just a quick train ride from the CBD.
“This year’s list celebrates quiet, soulful spots that define our coastal identity,” Farmer said.
National Standouts
New South Wales shines with Tallow Beach at number four, while Western Australia’s Pinky Beach and Hellfire Bay claim second and fifth.
Additionally, Queensland’s Beachcomber Cove and Inskip Point round out the tropical picks at third and seventh; Tasmania’s Godfreys Beach—The Nut hits sixth.
Finally, Victoria’s Mount Martha (eighth), South Australia’s Smoky Bay (ninth), and the Northern Territory’s unique inland Ellery Creek Big Hole (tenth) showcase Australia’s diverse shores.
Tourism Boost At Bate Bay

Trade and Tourism Minister Don Farrell hails the win amid booming US visitor numbers—745,000 Americans spent over $2 billion here last year.
“Australia has the best beaches in the world,” Farrell said, tying the list to G’Day USA 2026 promotions.
Tourism Australia MD Robin Mack urges explorers to venture beyond hotspots like these top picks.

Hop the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line from Sydney Central Station straight to Cronulla Station in about 49 minutes, then stroll the waterfront promenade to beaches like Wanda or Greenhills.
Meanwhile, drivers follow Princes Highway south to Rocky Point Road into Cronulla; parking dots the esplanade near North Cronulla Beach.

More on Bate Bay
Lifesavers patrol hotspots like Wanda, Elouera, and North Cronulla from October (or November) through April, keeping swimmers safe amid strong rips and surf.
Surfers flock here for consistent waves, while beachgoers enjoy dunes backed by Greenhills (Cronulla sandhills).
Since the 1974 storm erosion, ongoing coastal programs have fenced dunes, filled blowouts, and nourished sands to safeguard this stretch.
Moreover, Wanda Beach draws its name from a Dharawal word for “beach” or “sand hill,” honouring the Gweagal clan’s ancient coastal ties.
Catch the Cronulla Surf Festival‘s paddle-out record attempt and board demos on the 14th March, 2026 or tackle the 4km beachfront esplanade walk from Wanda to Bass and Flinders Point, hitting the five ocean pools.
