One of the Blue Mountains’ most storied estates has unveiled a striking new identity. Formerly known as Lilianfels Blue Mountains Resort & Spa, the heritage-listed retreat overlooking the Jamison Valley has officially reopened as Ardour Lilianfels Blue Mountains following a multimillion-dollar refurbishment.
The transformation marks a significant new chapter for the 137-year-old property, which officially reopens today, blending contemporary luxury with the history and character that have made it one of the region’s most enduring landmarks.
A new vision for a historic estate
Perched on the edge of Katoomba and surrounded by manicured gardens, the estate first began life in 1889 as the summer residence of Sir Frederick Darley, Chief Justice of New South Wales. Over the decades, they have hosted everyone from royalty and politicians to Hollywood stars seeking seclusion among the escarpments.
Now, the property joins the growing Ardour Hotels & Estates collection, becoming the luxury brand’s second heritage destination after the recent opening of Ardour Milton Park in Bowral.
Instead of reinventing the landmark, the transformation celebrates the elements that have always made Lilianfels special, from its stately architecture and romantic charm to its breathtaking natural setting.
Inside the multi-million-dollar revamp
Award-winning Australian design studio Luchetti Krelle has led the redesign, drawing inspiration from eccentric English garden estates and the property’s Victorian heritage.
The most visible changes can be found across the hotel’s 89 guest rooms and suites, which now feature bespoke furnishings, custom textiles, marble details and three distinct colour palettes designed to evoke different moods.
Elsewhere, refreshed reception spaces and common areas introduce richer textures, contemporary finishes and carefully curated design details that complement the original architecture rather than compete with it.
One of the standout additions is a dramatic wine wall, which anchors a new intimate dining experience within the hotel.
The heart of the hotel
At the centre of the reimagined property sits The Lounge, a new bar and dining destination designed to bring guests together from morning through to late evening.
The venue pairs a moody, sophisticated atmosphere with a menu that elevates familiar favourites. Guests can indulge in dishes such as Queensland spanner crab brioche, four-cheese truffle sliders, steak frites and curated charcuterie boards, alongside an extensive wine list and signature cocktails.
The hotel is also introducing a range of experiential dining offerings, including caviar service, an interactive roaming cheese station showcasing seasonal local produce and a refreshed high tea experience featuring indulgent additions such as gold-leaf accents and brioche bites.
Wellness takes centre stage
Lilianfels’ long-running spa will soon reopen under the Èliva banner, a new luxury wellness concept that is being rolled out across several high-end Australian properties. The upcoming spa experience aims to complement the estate’s tranquil mountain setting with an expanded focus on relaxation and rejuvenation.
Meanwhile, two of the property’s best-known dining venues remain unchanged. Darley’s Restaurant continues its reputation as one of the Blue Mountains’ premier fine-dining destinations, while Miss Lilian will keep serving its popular menu of Southeast Asian-inspired dishes.
A legacy that spans more than a century
During the early years of Federation, the estate became a favoured retreat for Sydney’s elite and welcomed notable guests including the Duchess of York—later Queen Mary—during her 1901 Australian visit. Australia’s first Prime Minister, Sir Edmund Barton, was also among its regular visitors.
The property underwent a major restoration in 1992, helping re-establish its position as one of the country’s leading luxury mountain escapes. More than three decades later, this latest transformation seeks to preserve that legacy while introducing a new generation of travellers to the estate.
With sweeping Jamison Valley views, renewed interiors and a fresh hospitality vision, Lilianfels Blue Mountains is positioning itself as one of the most compelling luxury stays in regional New South Wales.
