An American in Paris has been dazzling audiences around the globe since it first opened to widespread critical acclaim at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris back in 2014. Visually vibrant and imaginative with ballet-centric dance routines and classic Gershwin numbers, it’s now ready to take the newly refurbished Theatre Royal by storm.
An American in Paris
For the unacquainted, An American in Paris tells the story of a young American World War II vet who falls in love with a Parisian woman. The lavish romantic production includes eponymous tunes by the celebrated George and Ira Gershwin, including I Got Rhythm, But Not For Me and They Can’t Take That Away From Me.
With stunning choreography, toe-tapping numbers and enchanting set design, the musical makes for a captivating watch.
Directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Winter’s Tale), the Tony Award-winning musical comedy has been brought to Australia thanks to the The Australian Ballet along with GWB Entertainment. Ballet, of course, takes centre stage in the production which is led by an electrifying Robbie Fairchild and Leanne Cope who are both excellent in their roles as Jerry Mulligan and Lise Dassin. They’ve both previously been nominated for a Tony award for their exemplary performances.
The main leads are supported by a stellar supporting cast of Australian actors and dancers. You’ll want to watch out for the performance of I’ll Build A Stairway To Paradise by the exceptional Sam Ward.
The sets are evocative of classic Parisian style bringing unabashed fun and whimsy to the stage and the lighting and stage decor are a sight for sore eyes.
Inspired by the 1951 film of the same name, the Broadway musical has been dubbed a tour de force owing to its classical music and captivating dance numbers.
