The inaugural World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops list has dropped and Melburnians might want to sit down for this one because a Sydney cafe has claimed the top spot. Toby’s Estate flagship cafe and roastery in Chippendale took home the title of the best coffee shop in the world. Australia boasts three cafes in the top 10, the most of any country in the world, and nine in the top 100. The ranking was determined by evaluating the quality of coffee, barista experience, and customer service, alongside each venue’s approach to innovation, atmosphere, sustainability practices, food and pastry quality, and consistency. The awards were determined through a voting process, with 30% of the votes coming from the public and 70% from industry experts. Onyx Coffee LAB in the USA and Gota Coffee Experts in Austria rounded out the top 3.
The local-favourite coffee shop also serves as a roastery, with Toby’s Estate’s fine coffee available at locations around the globe.
Proud Mary in Melbourne secured fourth place, while Coffee Anthology in Brisbane followed closely at eighth. Australia was well represented in the global rankings, with Veneziano Coffee Roasters in Melbourne ranking 19th, Calēre Coffee at 28th, Adelaide’s Exchange Coffee at 37th, and Brisbane’s Fonzie Abbott at 70th. Also making the list were Melbourne’s Vacation Coffee at 71st and Seven Seeds at 87th.
