Although Sydney’s night life gets a bad rep, bars and pubs around the city continue to bring their A-game. Although swanky bars abound in the city, there are some inventive and luxurious watering holes that pack a serious punch. The 13th list of The World’s 50 Best Bars was announced this week with not one, not two, but three Sydney bars making the cut.

The World’s 50 Best Bars list

Unsurprisingly, one of Sydney’s favourites — Maybe Sammy has come out on top as Australia’s best bar, making the list at number 22. Despite dropping down from number 11 last year, it’s an impressive feat after a year of relentless lockdowns and uncertainty.

Well known for it’s aesthetic mid-century Palm Springs décor and brilliant cocktails, the bar, located at The Rocks provides great ambience, drinks and a distinct vibe.

The 50 Best Bars voting panel aptly described Maybe Sammy as “a grand hotel cocktail bar… but with more vibrance and whimsy (and without the hotel)”.

But that’s not all. Mezcal experts, Cantina OK! is at number 23, another fixture from last year.

And UK-expat Matt Whiley’s Re-Bar has taken the 46th spot on the list also nabbing the Ketel One Sustainable Bar Award after an audit by 50 Best’s sustainability partner, Food Made Good Global.

Re- was also commended for promoting sustainability while slinging delicious drinks and eats.

Outside of Sydney, Melbourne’s intimate and unique Above Board also made the list at number 44.
