Sydney’s earned itself some serious bragging rights with the unveiling of the World’s 50 Best Bars list this week. Only two Australian bars made the cut — and they’re both in Sydney. Voted for by bartenders and industry experts, Maybe Sammy was deemed the best bar in Australasia for the fourth year in a row. Another familiar Sydney staple that made the list is popular hole-in-the-wall mezcal bar Cantina OK!.
The World’s 50 Best Bars list
Known for its aesthetic mid-century décor and brilliant cocktails, Maybe Sammy in The Rocks has quickly become popular for its great atmosphere, drinks and service.
The 50 Best Bars voting panel lauded the bar for, “its lively and entertaining approach to hospitality.”
“It has quickly become Australia’s most famous cocktail bar, and at nearly four years into its life, Maybe Sammy continues to set the pace for cocktail bars in the country,” they added.
Mezcal experts, Cantina OK! who have also been fixtures on the list for the past few years were placed at number 41. The bar earned high praise for its hospitality, cocktails and spirits and was regarded as “Sydney’s shrine to all things agave.”
That’s all for the top 50 list. However, one more Sydney bar made it’s presence felt in the top 100 list at number 87. UK expat Matt Whiley’s Re-Bar was commended for promoting sustainability along with an excellent selection of drinks and pub grub. Outside of Sydney, Melbourne’s cosy and inventive Caretaker’s Cottage was placed at number 60.
