Born in Andalusia, flamenco is a famous Spanish art form that combines song (cante), dance (baile) and music (toque). Through soul-stirring vocals, rhythmic hand clapping, captivating dance moves and the strum of a guitar, flamenco performers express deep emotions that words sometimes struggle to convey. The profound musical style stirs audiences in a way that has to be experienced to be believed, and this season, ‘We Call It Flamenco’ has opened in Sydney to bring the magic of the centuries-old tradition to the city.

What is “We Call It Flamenco”?
‘We Call It Flamenco’ is a thrilling experience that honours the Spanish tradition of flamenco. Having evolved from a fusion of cultures and music styles, flamenco has a rich history that’s reflected in all aspects of the art form, from its age-old choreography to the traditional clothing worn by the performers. During the show, professional bailaoras (dancers) dressed in flowing flamenco dresses and Manila shawls twirl and stomp to flamenco melodies in a bed of flowers, making for a multi-sensory experience bursting with vibrant colours, sounds and tradition.
Flamenco, its palos and the show
Authentic flamenco shows journey through distinctive variants of the art form known as ‘palos.’ Each palo has its own rhythm, structure and theme, and there are approximately 50 in total. At ‘We Call It Flamenco’, there’ll be six famous palos performed on the night, including the fandango, zambra, soleá por bulerías and cantiñas. From loneliness to joy, anger to grief, these palos capture the innermost feelings of the human experience, allowing audiences to form a deep connection with the emotions expressed by the enthralling performers on stage.
