It’s barely been a minute since Vivid powered down for 2023 and we already have a fresh new festival to look forward to. Volume is the brand new offering by the Art Gallery of NSW and it’s bringing together some serious heavyweights from the music world for its electrifying debut. Solange (!) is set to headline along with Sampa The Great, Mount Eerie, Sonya Holowell and a number of local and international acts. Even more exciting — the party will go down in the World War II oil tanker in the recently renovated AGNSW among other spaces.
Volume Festival, Art Gallery of NSW
Set to take place from September 22 to October 8, the 17-day extravaganza is for lovers of art, music and performance. With free and ticketed events on the cards and a total of 27 stellar local and international acts, you can be sure there’s something for everyone.
If you prefer heading out during the day, both the north and south buildings of the gallery will open up for free events from Tuesday to Sunday and if you’re a night owl, the gallery will swing open its doors late at night for some after-hours fun.
An exciting feature of the festival will take place at the underground Second World War oil tanker where visitors can take in the vast space and experience its unique acoustics in an exclusive ticketed event.
“While the visual arts have traditionally been the Art Gallery’s focus, our expansion, through the Sydney Modern Project, has created an exceptional opportunity for us to extend our programming as part of our new curatorial narrative to include more cutting-edge live music, film, and performance. Volume is the manifestation of this vision,” Art Gallery of New South Wales director Michael Brand said in a statement.
