Newtown is increasingly becoming a breeding ground for themed restaurants and eccentric bars. Joining the fray is True Romance — a new 88-seat bar and restaurant with Tarantino-inspired artwork and all the fun vibes. And it really couldn’t be more ‘Tarantino’, unless of course it was also treating us to random shots of bare feet.
True Romance, Newtown
Named after a movie written by the man himself in 1993, True Romance is just as eclectic and original as the filmmaker’s diverse filmography but remains charmingly low-key. And it’s not just Tarantino diehards who can come together and geek out, the food and drinks menu is pretty stellar and comes from two accomplished names on the Sydney dining scene.
The bar is the brainchild of Nikhil Bhanot (Rockpool Dining, Regazzi and former head chef at The Imperial Hotel) along with Rob Kilby, the former general manager at Goros and Darlo Bar. Making it a veritable paradise for foodies, Bhanot’s menu reflects his rich cultural heritage with food offerings consisting of Australian classics with a zesty Indian twist. In classic East meets West fashion, you can expect everything from spiced chickpea pancakes and fried chicken in creamy makhani sauce to sublime white peas and burrata kulchas.

Staying true to the theme, you’ll find classic Tarantino movie quotes, posters and artworks sprinkled across the venue with signature cocktails also taking their names from Tarantino’s extensive movie soundtracks. Get your hands on a citrusy spritz called The Man In The Big Sombrero or cool down with Strawberry Letter — a dry gin, strawberry balsamic shrub and sparkling wine. Despite being as intricate as some of Tarantino’s plots, the cocktails are priced at the relatively reasonable price of $20 each.
The fresh and fun decor complements the bar perfectly. Get all the rock ‘n’ roll vibes at the front bar or soak up the sun at the courtyard, which swiftly transforms into a romantic little hideaway lined with fairy lights by night.
If that wasn’t enough, doors remain open till 2am and comedy and live music are on the cards as well. Check out their website for more details.
