2025 is already shaping up to be a stellar year for theatre in Sydney with the Book of Mormon slated to return and Tony Award-winning Broadway musical MJ set to take over the Sydney Lyric Theatre. Adding to the bumper line-up is a giant stage production of The Lord of the Rings that will make its Australian premiere at the State Theatre in January 2025.
The Lord of the Rings – A Musical Tale, Sydney
The Lord of the Rings loyalists and new fans are invited to step back into Middle Earth and relive J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved tale in all its glory again. Created under license from Middle-earth Enterprises, the production is coming to the Harbour City following a successful stint at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. The musical had its initial production at The Watermill Theatre in the UK, opening to both critical and commercial acclaim.
The Lord of the Rings – A Musical Tale features a book and lyrics by Shaun McKenna (Maddie, La Cava) and Matthew Warchus (Groundhog Day) and original music by Academy Award winner A.R. Rahman (Bombay Dreams, Slumdog Millionaire), Finnish folk band Värttinä, and Tony Award winner Christopher Nightingale (Matilda the Musical).
The musical will be presented in Australia by Kevin Wallace Productions, GWB Entertainment, and Middle-earth Enterprises and the search is currently on to find the perfect cast for the iconic tale.
