Some good news if you were disappointed about the cancellation of the Sydney Fringe Festival.

The Sydney Fringe has announced The Essence of Fringe — a digital program scheduled from September 10 to October 1. After their 2021 programme was sadly cancelled due to current restrictions, the new digital programme aims to supports artists and create new opportunities in the industry.

The Essence of Fringe

The program is set to feature nine highlight music and theatre events from the earlier planned 2021 program. There will also be three Australian premieres by award-winning American performance artist Brian Feldman and two works by celebrated Australian artist Jon Bennett. Looking to get a break in the industry? There’s a masterclass program of seminars and workshops designed as a focus on artist career development.

You’ll remember the festival previously announcing We’ll Fringe Again, a fundraising campaign which encourages the public to buy a ticket to support affected artists and help the festival return next year. Continuing its push to encourage the community to ‘buy a ticket’ to support local artists, the digital program will include both free and ticketed events.

Sydney Fringe CEO and Festival Director Kerri Glasscock said “As the pandemic continues to wreak havoc on our sector, Sydney Fringe knew it was important to bring our artists and audiences together digitally. The Essence of Fringe offers a glimpse into the incredible 2021 program but more than that, it showcases the wide range of work we do all year round supporting artists and organisations.”

“We are delighted to be able to present this program of brilliant international and Sydney made performances as well as important discussion and education opportunities. We hope that they can bring some relief to all those in lockdown as well as a fantastic opportunity for audiences to engage and support artists right from their living rooms,” she added.

Highlights of the event
