15 Locales To Get Your Taco Fix On Taco Tuesday

There’s no better day to eat a taco than on a Tuesday.

And though I don’t know why—aside from the alliteration, the syllable count or the similarity in sound of Tues and twos—I don’t really care because tacos are cheaper on Tuesdays.

And if you’re in the mood for tacos on a Tuesday, then all you’ve got to do is head to one of these fine taco establishments to get your fix. (Featured image: Krisztian Tabori)

PLEASE NOTE: Due to COVID-19, some of these restaurants are currently closed to the public. We’ve done our best to provide up-to-date information, but please always check before you go as things are liable to change.

1. Chica Bonita @ PS40 Bar

There’s just one more Tuesday to come for you to grab a hold of a Chica Bonita x PS40 collab. And if you don’t already know, Taco Tuesday with Chica Bonita is not like Taco Tuesday anywhere else.

Why? The team at Chica Bonita team up with chefs from around Sydney and invite them to create a special set menu for the night.

Taco Tuesday on August 11 will see the Tex Mex theme make an appearance with four special taco varieties for you to try. Included in the $50 menu is a special Margarita or themed cocktail.

⏰ Booking via email is essential, bookings@ps40bar.com

📍6pm, 7:30pm, 9pm seatings

2. Vandal, Newtown

This is not authentic Mexican. Then again, it’s not trying to be and as a result, Newtown now has another 100% plant-based restaurant dishing out flavourful tacos. Taking their inspiration from the Latino food trucks of southern California, Vandal uses Mexican cooking as a base to interpret other cuisines and bring the flavours of various migrant communities together. For just $4 a taco, it’s hard to say no to trying something different. Oh, there’s $15 Margaritas too.

⏰ From 5pm till late

📍 403 King Street, Newtown

3. El Loco, CBD and Surry Hills

Set up like a Mexican cantina, expect fun times at El Loco with over 25 types of tequila behind the bar. And with tacos at $5 apiece all day on Tuesdays with six varieties including my personal favourite Lengua, you’ll be sure to get your fill of them. Also, keep a lookout for their secret taco, the special of the day.

Go between 5-7pm to take advantage of Happy Hour.

⏰ All day

📍 64 Foveaux Street, Surry Hills

📍 111 Sussex Street, Sydney (Temporarily Closed)

4. Bad Hombres, Surry Hills

Three tacos for a tenner. That’s a good deal anywhere and even better when the tacos look this good. And at Bad Hombres, you know you’re actually being good since the tacos are all plant-based. Choose from ‘Chipotle’ PotatoMiso Eggplant, ‘Pastor’ Mushroom, and Cauliflower ‘Chorizo’ to satisfy your taco cravings. Make sure you book a table via their website, though, otherwise you risk missing out.

⏰ From 5:30pm, booking essential

📍 40 Reservoir Street, Surry Hills

5. The Norfolk, Surry Hills

As far as good deals come on Taco Tuesday, The Norfolk’s $3 tacos, $4 tequilas and $5 Tecate tinnies is damn hard to beat. And then, twice a night every Tuesday, they decide to have a Fire Sale on tacos. When you hear the bell ring, all tacos are up for grabs at the ridiculous crazy price of $1 for the next 15 minutes. That’s right, one-freakin’-dollar.

Make a booking to make sure you get a table and follow their social media for a heads up on when the Fire Sales are starting

📍 305 Cleveland St, Surry Hills

6. Cantina Bar, Balmain

Tacos at $5 a pop make for a pretty good Tuesday. It’s even better when you realise that there are a whopping eight different tacos on the menu, including a vegan and veg option as well as three seafood varieties! Talk about selection. Get there early and take advantage of the $5 at 5 happy hour.

⏰ 5pm till late

8. El Camino Cantina, The Rocks and other locations

With every drink purchase at El Camino Cantina, you can order up to five tacos from the $2 range. Or, you can step your taco game up and select from the best-selling Cadillac menu where the tacos are a steal at $4. Either way you go, you’re going to come out winning at El Camino Cantina. Our go-to is the Beer-Battered Barramundi.

With 11 tacos on the menu, including two veg and a vegan option, Beach Burrito Company has definitely got their bases covered. And they’ve got you covered with stores in a number of locations – each designed with their own theme in mind – and, most importantly, $3 tacos.

What’s not to love about this crew mixing Australia culture with fresh, healthy and quality Mexican food?

Evoking the laidback Californian surf vibe is SoCal, the southern Californian inspired bar and eatery in Neutral Bay, where you can kick back on the rooftop and drink bottomless rosé for lunch every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

But not on Tuesdays, where you’re going to be sipping on frozen cocktail slushy specials and downing $3 tacos from 5pm onwardsAnd though there are only four tacos to choose from on the menu, sometimes less is more as you’re sure to feast on your favourite variety until there are no more.

Not sure which is your favourite? I’d try them all. And again if I wasn’t sure. But if you’re not like me, try the SoCal taco quiz to help you decide where to start next Tuesday night.

Go straight after work to catch Happy Hour from 5-6:30pm for $12 Frozen Cocktail Slushy Specials, $5 Tecate Mexican Lager, $5 House White or Rosé and $5 French Sparkling.

Proudly situating itself as unauthentic Mexican food, Contrabando takes its inspiration from the street vendors of Southern California – fresh and complementary ingredients, rich flavours and traditional cooking techniques.

And their tacos?

Just $3 each. And choose from six variations: beef, chicken, prawn, fish, cauliflower and pumpkin. And to help wash them all down, they’ve got $7/$10 premium tap beers, $7 glasses of wine, and $14 classic margaritas.

 12-3pm and 5-10pm

📍 131 Macquarie Street, Sydney (Temporarily Closed)

13. El Topo, Bondi Junction

Want to eat tacos on a rooftop, then El Topo at the Eastern Hotel is one of your Tuesday Taco targets. The colours, the cacti, and the ceramic wall tiles will all help transport you to Oaxaca, Mexico, the inspiration behind the rooftop taqueria, before the taste of any of their tacos do.

Out of the seven on the menu, be sure to try the coffee marinated beef taco or the battered Hoki fish with Habanero mayo. Otherwise, the fried cactus taco might prickle your interest. Oh, and they are only $3 each.

Happy Hour kicks off at 4pm and continues till 7pm with $5 craft beers, $10 margaritas, and $20 sangria jugs. Are you going alone or are you going with friends?

⏰ From 4pm

📍 500 Oxford St, Bondi Junction (Temporarily Closed)

14. Barrio Cellar, CBD

Barrio Cellar specialises in late-night feels. The tequileria and eatery, providing Mexican and southern Californian food and cocktails, is a basement venue designed by award-winning architects where you can get cosy and close to whoever you dragged along to Taco Tuesday.

Or you can go alone and indulge in as many $3 tacos as you can (except for the Camaron Taco, Carne Asada Taco & Cheeseburger Taco which are at their normal prices) because if there’s anyone you should be getting close to and cosy with, it’s yourself.

The corn tortillas themselves are pretty special as well. Staying true to traditional Aztex Nitxamal method, the corn is soaked in naturally occurring limestone before being ground into corn dough, flattened and cooked.

And if you’re in need of more than the normal amount of drink to wash them tacos down, Happy Hour is from 3-7pm.

⏰ All day

📍 Basement Level, 58 Elizabeth St, Sydney (Temporarily Closed)

15. Chica Bonita, CBD

Chica Bonita’s Taco Tuesday night is not like other nights on this list.

Chica Bonita’s Taco Tuesday night is different every Tuesday.

Chica Bonita’s Taco Tuesday night is a chef special.

Chica Bonita’s Taco Tuesday night is one not to miss.

Why? Because every Tuesday Chica Bonita (CBD) invites a different Sydney chef to prepare four special tacos. And for just $30, you get to try all four and keep trying them until they sell out.

Make sure to check their Instagram to find out who is showing up and when.
