The train network in Sydney is facing more disruption as the latest strike kicked off today with hundreds of drivers and rail workers around the city refusing to show up to work. Over 90% of morning peak services were either cancelled or delayed and by Friday afternoon more than 465 services had been cancelled across all lines, with the T2 Leppington, Inner West, and T8 Airport hit the hardest. The South line has stopped completely, with bus services running between Wollongong and Kiama and Kiama and Bomaderry.
Negotiations between the Rail, Tram, and Bus Union (RTBU) and the NSW government broke down on Thursday night over a one-off $4,500 bonus payment for all rail workers, which was part of a previous pay deal. The NSW government argues that the bonus would cost the state around $60 million.
Over 465 train services were cancelled and more chaos is expected until at least Wednesday next week. All lines could be impacted, with inner-city services expected to be the most affected. Trains are running up to 23 km/h slower than usual on sections with a speed limit of over 80 km/h, causing major delays.
“Our teams are working hard to recover as much of the timetable as possible, however, due to a high level of staff absences, we are looking at ongoing, substantial, and worsening disruption,” the Transport for NSW website read.
The metros are still operating, but expect heavy crowds due to the ongoing train chaos. At this point, Transport for NSW advises to “delay non-essential travel, use alternative forms of public transport, and plan ahead.”
