Have fuel prices got you rethinking the car commute? You’re not alone—and Transport for NSW seems to be listening.
In good news for anyone who spends their mornings packed into the Sydney Metro, a temporary service uplift is hitting the network this week, bringing more frequent trains and shorter wait times across the city.
Extra Trains & Faster Trips

Three additional Sydney Metro trains are joining the Tallawong-to-Sydenham line until June 7, adding 166 extra weekly services to the timetable.
The bonus trains were originally slated for the upcoming Southwest Metro line, but with testing paused during a five-week construction blitz, they’ve been put to work elsewhere—a win for the roughly 1.5 million passengers who use the Metro every week.
Peak-hour riders will feel the biggest relief:
- Morning and afternoon peaks will tighten from 4-minute gaps to 3.5-minute intervals.
- Weekend services will increase from every 10 minutes to every 7 between late morning and evening.
This means easier city trips, quicker commutes and more flexibility to make it to commitments.
“World-class public transport is permanent cost-of-living relief—that’s why we’re providing more of it,” said Minister for Transport John Graham. “Rather than have trains sitting empty while we undertake this construction sprint, we’re adding them to the line now to step up services where we know there is high demand.”
Construction Blitz Underway

Behind the cement, hundreds of workers are powering through a five-week construction sprint on the Southwest Metro extension between Bankstown and Sydenham. Testing is paused until early May while teams complete crucial upgrades across the line.
Key works include:
- Installation of 1,140 new fixed gap fillers on 10 upgraded station platforms.
- 170 mechanical gap fillers already in place for smoother, safer boarding.
- Overhead wiring and signal works across the corridor.
- Bridge improvements at Belmore, Wiley Park and Punchbowl.
- Track preparation including ballast refreshing, tamping and monitoring systems.
- Station upgrades such as retiling, deep cleaning and bird-proofing.
What To Expect Next

The Southwest Metro is gearing up for its next stage—trial running—once testing resumes.
- Weekend line closures will occur on 9th–10th May and 16th–17th May.
- Passengers are encouraged to plan ahead and check travel apps for up-to-date service info before heading out.
The extra trains will remain on the Tallawong-to-Sydenham line until June 7, after which they’ll return to the Southwest project for final testing ahead of its anticipated opening later this year.
Transport for NSW says keeping the temporary uplift beyond that date would delay the rollout—and commuters in Sydney’s southwest have waited long enough for their turn on the Metro.
For now, enjoy the smoother rides, shorter waits and a little breathing room on your daily dash.
