If you thought all the major musicals for the season were done, we’ve got some news for you. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is playing at the Sydney Opera House this July with a serving of greed, lust, and vengeance. The murderous musical tells the tale of a barber in 19th-century London who returns from wrongful imprisonment driven by a mad desire for revenge. Expect blood, gore and violence aplenty.
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
The dark and deadly production by the Victorian Opera and New Zealand Opera will play at the Opera House until August 27, starring Ben Mingay as the iconic villain, Sweeney Todd, and Antoinette Halloran in the role of Mrs. Lovett alongside an 18-person cast.
If you don’t know much about Sweeney Todd, let’s just say good meat pies were hard to come by in late 1700s London, and the two leads had to find creative ways to make some.
Winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Sweeney Todd has gained worldwide recognition for its musical score and complex narrative. And after critically acclaimed seasons in Melbourne, Perth, and Adelaide, Sydney is finally getting a taste of the action. Artistic director of the State Opera of South Australia, Stuart Maunder, will direct this season of Sweeney Todd.
“We’ve wanted to bring this musical thriller to Sydney for a very long time, so premiering it at the Sydney Opera House is an experience every bit as thrilling as the musical itself,” Maunder said in a statement.
