Mario fans, get ready to power up. To celebrate the upcoming release of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie—Nintendo and Illumination’s next big-screen team-up—Universal Pictures is dropping a free pop-up activation in Sydney’s Pitt Street Mall next week.
For one day only, on Tuesday, 10 March, the iconic shopping strip will transform into a slice of the Mushroom Kingdom as hundreds of Super Mario Galaxy blind boxes land at the entrance to Westfield Sydney.
A Cosmic Celebration Lands In Pitt Street Mall

Inside each mystery box is a collectible Luma plush keychain—one of six colourful designs drawn straight from the Super Mario universe, plus a rare secret Luma for the lucky few.
Moreover, the event celebrates Mar10 Day, a global fan holiday that turns “Mario” into a day-long excuse for dress-ups, collectibles and nostalgia.
The Sydney pop-up runs from 12pm to 6pm (or until stock runs out), inviting fans to snag a free keepsake and snap a photo inside a giant Warp Pipe installation.
“Blind boxes have exploded as part of youth culture,” says [Universal Pictures spokesperson, if known]. “We wanted to bring that same sense of surprise and community to the streets of Sydney.”
Originally popularised through online unboxing videos, mystery boxes have become their own social media obsession—combining the thrill of discovery with the shareable fandom that fuels Gen Z’s collecting habits. Now, they’ve evolved into a cultural currency in their own right.
The Expansion Of The Galaxy
Finally, with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie set to hit cinemas on April 1, Sydney’s CBD will be the first place in Australia to feel the hype. You can expect queues, smiles and a whole lot of Lumas lighting up Pitt Street Mall.
Meanwhile, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie follows Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach as they blast off into the stars, joined once again by the twinkling sidekicks who stole the show in the first film. If the first trailer is any hint, this sequel is set to be Illumination’s most cosmic adventure yet.
