There’s something timeless about going on a heritage train ride with gusty steam engines, classic corridors, and all the old-timey touches that are hard to resist. Winding past the region’s most rugged landscapes, these nostalgic train rides allow visitors to step back in time and enjoy a slow, leisurely trip through some of NSW’s most gorgeous spots, coastal vistas and historic charm included. While slow train travel might not be as popular now as the yesteryears there are plenty of options around town if you want to hop on a steam locomotive or take the kids for a miniature railway journey. Here are some of the best steam train rides you can take around Sydney.
1. Zig Zag Railway
The heritage Zig Zag Railway is one of the most popular steam train rides near Sydney and an absolute delight for kids and adults alike. The iconic train journey first started in 1869 as part of the Western Railway line that connected Sydney with Western NSW. Today it’s one of the most tranquil ways to experience the beauty of the Blue Mountains as the train winds past gorgeous scenery, valleys, and stunning mountain views. The iconic train ride was shut for a long 12 years before it finally returned to action just last year. The steam train ride is open every Friday and on weekends, make a booking online before you show up to avoid disappointment. You can get to Zig Zag Railway from Sydney within a 2.5-hour drive.
2. Thirlmere Vintage Railway
Did you know the NSW Rail Museum runs heritage train rides every weekend? The 40-minute train ride runs from Thirlmere to Buxton and it’s the perfect family-friendly adventure. Located just under 2 hours from Sydney, guests can also find drinks, sandwiches, salads, and other snacks at the NSW Rail Museum Kiosk before departing. If you want more adventure out of your trip, head to the Thirlmere Lakes National Park just a short drive from the Museum, and try and scout for glowing ghost mushrooms. Book your ticket to the steam train ride here.
3. Hunter Valley Steamfest
The Hunter Valley region is chock full of serene wineries, charming small towns, and plenty of recreational activities. One of its underrated offerings is the Hunter Valley Steamfest where visitors can book vintage steam train rides to Buxton and Picton and also enjoy live music, roving performances, and much more as part of the program. The event is a major celebration of the steam locomotive season and a true step back in time. Tickets tend to sell out fast; get yours here.

Departing from Sydney’s Central Station, this steam train ride offers a scenic day trip to the Southern Highlands. The steam locomotive R766 takes over from a heritage diesel train at Enfield Yard and then takes passengers all the way to either Bowral or Moss Vale. Guests can depart in either town and enjoy a few hours exploring the cosy cafes, bakeries, boutique shops, and local markets in the area. The steam train runs on select days and the tickets for the September rides are now available. Book here.
