Few things have blown up the internet this year quite like the release of Squid Game. Not even Facebook changing its name. Dropping just prior to Halloween, we’d stop just short of calling you a liar if you said you hadn’t scrolled through your Instagram to a flurry of dress-up posts featuring the red boiler suits, masks or striking turquoise jackets.
Even before October 31, it was impossible to ignore the impact of the Netflix show, as it became the most-streamed series of all time on the platform in record time. After just 17 days of its initial release on September 17, the South Korean show had garnered 111 million viewers, and that number jumped to 142 million after a further 11 days.

Jumping forward to November 2021 provides good news for those masses. Hwang Dong-hyuk, the show’s creator, has just confirmed that a second season is definitely happening.
Speaking to Alternative Press, he also confirmed the return of a vital character, saying: “There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season.
“So I almost feel like you leave us no choice! But I will say, there will indeed be a second season. But I do think it’s too early to say when and how it’s going to happen. So I will promise you this… Gi-hun will come back, he’ll do something for the world.”
This comes after his show was rejected for ten years by studios, so what we see unfolding is quite the success story. Stay tuned for further information on season two of Squid Game.

What do we know so far about season two of Squid Game?
When will Squid Game season two be released?
Work is in the early stages so far, with Hwang Dong-hyuk confirming as much. The important thing, however, is that it is definitely happening. Squid Game season one took around two years to produce, so a second season could be released on Netflix in 2023.
What happened in Squid Game season one?
Death; and lots of it, basically. When one of the episodes (number two) is named “Hell”, you probably know what you’re getting yourself into. A dystopian story set in South Korea, 456 contestants — each gripped by a financial headlock in an unforgiving landscape of capitalism — are handed cards to come and play games from their childhood for money. One big catch, crucially, is that a loss in a game of red light, green light or marbles means death. The players grapple with a catch-22 which ultimately leads to their demise. Most of them, anyway.
Which characters are returning for Squid Game season two?
Seong Gi-hun, the show’s central character, has been confirmed as a returning character for Squid Game season two by the show’s creator. Squid Game season one ended with Gi-hun returning to the next round of games after an infiltrating policeman failed to take down the contest. Thus far, no other characters have been slated to return, but a return of the chilling Front Man host of the games is certainly on the list of possibilities.
What is the plot of Squid Game season two going to entail?
We’ve just spoiled a hefty amount of season one here for those who haven’t seen it, but we couldn’t do the same for Squid Game season two, even if we wanted to. Production hasn’t begun yet, with ideas in the very early stage, and we’d imagine Netflix and Hwang Dong-hyuk are going to keep that under pretty tight wraps when it starts being pieced together. And besides; when it drops, you can bet your life savings most of us will be doing u-turns on the internet to avoid stumbling across a potential spoiler.
