After a long spell of soggy days, a polar blast is set to unleash a burst of snowfall in parts of southeastern Australia. Unlike previous years where snow was largely restricted to the alpine regions of NSW, snowfall could potentially traverse lower parts of the state in the coming days.
Among the regions that could receive snowfall in NSW are the Blue Mountains, the Southern, Central and Northern Tablelands of NSW along with elevated parts of the ACT and some parts of Canberra, Weatherzone reports. Elevated parts of Victoria outside the Victorian Alps as well as parts of Tasmania that are located below mountainous regions are also expected to receive snowfall.
The weather drama will commence this weekend with icy blasts of air set to reach southeastern Australia by Saturday. These frigid temperatures are set to continue for most of next week so bundle up.
The NSW Central Tablelands could experience light snow at elevated levels around 1200m on Sunday night or Monday morning with the possibility of snowfall increasing early next week on Monday and Tuesday, according to Weatherzone meteorologist Felix Levesque.
Specifically, the Barrington Tops just northwest of Newcastle will likely receive snowfall including the Northern Tablelands and the town of Guyra.
This is also good news for Australia’s ski resorts which have not had the most ideal start to winter with around 25 to 50 cm of snowfall expected at most resorts between Saturday and Thursday. Read more here.
