Ready or not, winter is here in full force. NSW is bracing for a frosty long weekend as a blast of polar air from the sub-Antarctic sweeps across the state, bringing freezing winds, mountain snow, and a noticeable drop in temperatures. The first week of winter made a dramatic entrance, with Sydney shivering through its coldest morning on Thursday, June 5 — and there’s more on the way. The chilly temps are expected to linger well into the long weekend, right as ski season kicks off across the state.
Starting today and continuing through to the King’s Birthday public holiday on Monday, a low-pressure system will bring a surge of cold air across New South Wales, the ACT, Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania.
Snow is set to blanket alpine regions for roughly four days, spreading widely through central Victoria and NSW. There’s even a chance you’ll see snow in places like the Blue Mountains, Orange, and Canberra, in case you’re planning a last-minute long weekend getaway from Sydney. Weatherzone reports that Australia’s ski resorts could see up to half a metre of snow, though the wet and windy conditions might not be ideal for skiing or snowboarding.
The Bureau of Meteorology predicts temperatures will drop below freezing in Canberra, while Hobart will see lows around four degrees, Adelaide and Melbourne near six, and Sydney down to about eight degrees.
