Sydney has its fair share of beautiful beaches but if you don’t live close to one or are simply craving a change, you’ll be pleased to know that a brand new spot to cool off is on the way. Locals along the Parramatta River will be able to enjoy all the benefits of a beach right on their doorstep with the opening of Putney Beach next week. It will join other popular swimming spots like “Pondi” in Penrith and Windsor Beach on the Hawkesbury River. Here’s everything you need to know.
Putney Beach
Funded by the NSW Government in partnership with the City of Ryde, the new beach is part of the ongoing effort to create accessible, vibrant public spaces through the NSW Government’s Places to Swim program.
Key features include new limestone steps and handrails ensuring easy access in and out of the water, on-site parking, and toilet facilities. The swim area features a fully netted enclosure for added swimmer safety. Putney Beach has also undergone thorough water testing and pollution checks to ensure it’s safe for all to enjoy.
When will Putney Beach open
Originally scheduled to open on January 18, the beach’s opening was delayed due to adverse weather conditions. It is now set to open on Wednesday, January 22, with a grand opening planned to mark the occasion. The day will kick off with a traditional smoking ceremony and speeches, followed by BYO floaty races, live music, and a sausage sizzle.
How to get there
Putney Beach is located on the Parramatta River in Putney Park, about 14 kilometres from the city. It’s a quick 15-minute drive from the CBD, or you can take the ferry to Kissing Point Wharf and enjoy a short walk, or catch a bus from Meadowbank train station.
