Western Sydney is poised to welcome a major new cultural landmark, with Powerhouse Parramatta now scheduled to open in late 2026. Rising along the Parramatta River, the long-awaited museum is designed as a transparent, future-focused space that will significantly expand access to the Powerhouse Collection. After more than four years of construction, the $915 million project has now reached a major milestone, with the building completed and handed over ahead of its opening phase. Once operational, it will introduce a more versatile museum experience to the region, with expansive exhibition halls, learning spaces, public programs and more. Positioned as a long-term addition to the city’s cultural landscape, the project reflects the rapid growth of Western Sydney and the increasing demand for major institutions outside the CBD.
Powerhouse Parramatta Nears 2026 Debut

Parramatta has been drawing attention as a destination in its own right, recently named among the world’s top foodie cities and best places to visit in 2026, and the arrival of Powerhouse Parramatta adds another cultural layer to that momentum. As the largest infrastructure project in Australia since the Sydney Opera House and the largest museum in New South Wales, it is a massive undertaking that underscores the sheer scale of the development and its importance to the region.
The building spans around 30,000 square metres and includes one of the largest column-free exhibition spaces in the country, with an 18-metre ceiling and room for large-scale installations. One of the first major exhibitions planned is Task Eternal, billed as the largest exhibition on space exploration in Australia, exploring humanity’s pursuit of flight and space through immersive displays. Beyond the main galleries, the museum houses a range of specialised spaces, including residential studios for visiting researchers, a 200-seat kitchen focused on the technology of food, and a rooftop terrace featuring gardens and an observatory. This program is designed to support a rotating mix of exhibitions while opening up more of the 500,000-object Powerhouse collection to the public.
Alongside its exhibitions, the museum will host overnight learning programs for up to 10,000 students each year, supported by a 60-bed accommodation facility. Five major international exhibitions are already in development for the opening period, pointing to a large-scale launch. The building is also set to operate as a net-zero facility from day one, establishing it as one of the most sustainable cultural projects in the country.
