A 41-piece orchestra will perform the full classical music score of Parasite—the 2020 Academy Award winner for Best Picture—live at the Sydney Opera House on 24 and 25 April. Conducted by renowned composer Jung Jae-il, who produced the film’s original soundtrack plus Squid Game and more, the performance will accompany a screening of Bong Joon‑ho’s acclaimed masterpiece on the big screen.
Parasite: Live in Concert at Sydney Opera House — what to expect and how to get tickets
Winner of a BAFTA, Golden Globe, Cannes Palme d’Or and four Oscars including Best Picture, Parasite—-one of the most acclaimed films in recent history—follows the Kim family’s cunning infiltration of a super-wealthy Seoul household, where money, greed and a hidden basement secret unleash chaos.
Inspired by Baroque influences, the film’s composer Jung Jae-il channelled the likes of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons to create suspense and an unsettling atmosphere that grows throughout the film. Eerie repetition and intense, ascending musical patterns typical of the Baroque style build as the tension reaches a boiling point.
Jung Jae-il rose to fame after his work on Parasite, then secured the score for the hit Netflix show Squid Game and the 2022 Palme d’Or nominated Broker. The music maestro famously struggled to compose Parasite’s opening theme, only finally getting his seventh attempt accepted by the director—a score he composed while battling a hangover. He’ll be playing piano and conducting the 41-piece orchestra at these Parasite: Live in Concert specials in Sydney.
