Opera Australia is clearing out its Alexandria storehouse and that means the fanciest of fancy dress on sale.
With prices starting as low as $2, and thousands upon thousands of costumes and props on offer, there might be a bit of argy-bargy at Opera Australia’s Alexandria storehouse this November, which is probably why their one-of-a-kind costume sale is a book in advance type of event. Held on Saturday and Sunday over two weekends this November, those in attendance will be able to get their hands on hand-made and designed costumes as well as couture garments from retired stage productions. Among all the clothing on offer, you’ll be able to dress up as an Egyptian, be conscripted into the war effort thanks to your military garb, and twirl around in dresses from pretty much any period of history. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to try any of the costumes because Covid.
But it’s not just the costumes that have to go now that the Alexandria storehouse has been put up for sale. The props need to find new homes too. With summer right around the corner, this might be your opportunity to score yourself a day bed, giant wicker baskets, and sculptures to decorate your home. There will also be fake rocks and urinals, vintage army beds, and chairs, chairs, chairs among the props you can take home. Pieces you never thought you needed will be screaming at you to take them home.
To make it fair for everyone at this extraordinary sale, customers will only be able to purchase up to fifteen costumes and five props each. The costumes and props will also be replenished throughout the weekend and prior to the opening of the second round of shopping. Those purchasing items too big to take home on the day will be able to book in a time with Opera Australia to pick it up during the week.
We’ve still got to keep to the current restrictions, so face masks are advised to be worn and all those feeling unwell should stay away. And in the interests of everybody involved, temperature checks will take place on the door and payment will be by card only.
The Opera Australia Costume And Prop Clearance Sale takes place on 13 and 14 November as well as 27 and 28 November with five one-hour sessions taking place each day.
