From sweeping lookouts and rainforest trails to dramatic waterfalls, campgrounds and rugged bushwalks, NSW national parks are packed with wonder and home to some of the state’s most memorable outdoor experiences. With more people choosing nature-based getaways and affordable weekend adventures closer home, demand for well-maintained tracks, picnic areas and visitor facilities has never been greater. Now, a major investment by the NSW Government is set to deliver upgrades across the state’s wild and wonderful network of national parks, making it easier and safer for families, hikers and campers to get out and explore. Here’s what’s changing.
Major upgrades are coming to NSW national parks
The $130 million investment will fund upgrades to visitor infrastructure across the state’s national parks, including walking tracks, campgrounds, picnic areas, lookouts, roads, visitor centres and public amenities. It will also help repair and strengthen infrastructure damaged by floods, storms and landslips, improving resilience to extreme weather and allowing the parks to reopen more quickly after closures.
The funding builds on a number of projects already underway across the state. At Wolli Creek Regional Park in Sydney, work is nearing completion on upgraded walking tracks, picnic facilities, playground equipment and amenities, while an additional three hectares of bushland has also been added to the park. Elsewhere, the NSW Government is progressing the Great Koala National Park, new multi-day walking experiences near Sydney, Lithgow and Dorrigo, as well as new visitor centres at Kamay Botany Bay and Dorrigo National Park.
The announcement comes as NSW’s network of around 900 national parks and reserves continues to grow in popularity, recording 65.6 million visits last year. Environment Minister Penny Sharpe said the investment would help deliver the facilities visitors want while making it easier for more people to enjoy time in nature.
“NSW national parks are booming and it’s easy to see why. They are some of the most beautiful, accessible and affordable places for families to spend time together,” she said.
