Western Sydney’s massive new airport is inching closer to reality, with passenger flights already confirmed to begin from October 2026. Now, one of the key road links designed to connect the region to the new aviation hub is about to open to drivers. The brand-new M12 Motorway, built as a direct gateway to Western Sydney International Airport (Nancy-Bird Walton), has been under construction for several years and is finally nearing completion. Set to open this weekend, the motorway promises a faster, purpose-built route through Western Sydney and will form a crucial part of the infrastructure supporting the city’s second airport.
The M12 Motorway opens this weekend

The new motorway will open to drivers in the early hours of Saturday, March 14, stretching for around 16 kilometres between Elizabeth Drive in the east and The Northern Road in the west. Designed as an intersection-free corridor with a 100km/h speed limit, the route will give drivers a faster, more direct way to move across Western Sydney. Transport planners expect it to take pressure off surrounding suburban streets, which currently carry a large share of regional traffic. Once open, the road is also expected to absorb tens of thousands of vehicle trips each day.
The motorway will also play a key role in linking the airport precinct with the wider road network as development accelerates across Western Sydney. The surrounding area is set to become the Western Sydney Aerotropolis — a planned hub for business, technology and advanced manufacturing expected to create thousands of jobs in the coming years. By providing a direct connection between major arterial roads, the M12 is expected to support the region’s rapid growth while making it easier for workers, travellers and freight to move in and out of the airport area.
“Communities in Western Sydney deserve world-class infrastructure, and this new motorway will help ease pressure on local roads and improve connections across the city,” NSW Premier Chris Minns said about the motorway.
The motorway will be free to use, making it one of the few new major roads in Sydney to open without tolls. Read more about the M12 Motorway here.
