Spring is here and there’s no better time for wildflower-lined hikes, leisurely drives through the countryside, and nature-focused activities. When the weather warms up, it’s also the perfect time for balmy weekend strolls. Whether your preferred landscape includes mountains, waterfalls, or rainforests, you’re bound to find something of interest in and around Sydney. A delightful spring and summertime coastal escape near the city is Murrays Beach, a highlight of the spectacular Booderee National Park and an excellent option to spend an afternoon with soft white sand between the toes. One of the best ways to explore it is on the Munyunga Waraga Dhugan loop walk which flaunts some of the best views in the area. Here’s everything you need to know about the dreamy beach walk.
Munyunga waraga dhugan walking trail, Murrays Beach
Located in a protected bay and sheltered by Bowen Island, a tiny sandstone spot only about 1km long, this picturesque beach offers plenty including the same white sand as Hyams Beach but far lesser crowds, hidden coves, crystalline waters, rock pools, native forests, a photogenic sea cave, and even an adorable fairy penguin colony. ‘Munyunga waraga dhugan’ translates to ‘white-bellied sea eagle’s home camp’ in the Dhurga language of the Wreck Bay Aboriginal people.
The self-guided trail starts at the Murrays Beach car park and does a 5.4km circuit trail around the southern headland of Jervis Bay. Visitors are treated to Booderee’s rich culture and history and native plants and animals along the way.
Highlights of the walk
There is a diverse variety on offer on this short albeit striking walk. Fourteen information signs are dotted across the route if you’re eager to learn more about the area and it is recommended to walk along the marked trail to get the most out of the walk. Scribbly Gums are a key feature and hikers can also spot Flannel flowers during spring and summer along the trail. As you soak up panoramic views of Jervis Bay, keep an eye out for native fauna including the endangered eastern bristlebird. The trail also leads to Governor’s Head Lookout where you can spot which offers lovely views of Bowen Island and its colony of little penguins along with dolphins, seals, and whales. Heading back to the car park, you’ll be treated to picture-perfect views of Murrays Beach and the stunning blue waters of Jervis Bay.
