With summer approaching, there’s no shortage of beautiful places to swim along the NSW coast, from secluded beaches to scenic rock pools. But one spectacular swimming spot near Sydney stands out for its sheer size. Merewether Ocean Baths, recognised as the largest ocean baths in the Southern Hemisphere, offer an impressive stretch of saltwater swimming just a stone’s throw from the city. Overlooking the mighty Pacific Ocean, the historic baths have been a favourite among locals and visitors for generations, with plenty of space to cool off, swim laps or simply enjoy the coastal scenery. Best of all, entry is completely free. Here’s what to know before planning a visit.
Merewether Ocean Baths

Carved into the rocky coastline at the southern end of Merewether Beach, the ocean baths comprise two expansive saltwater pools separated by a concrete walkway. The main swimming area measures approximately 100 metres across, offering considerably more room than a typical ocean pool. Alongside it sits a smaller, shallower pool that provides a gentler swimming environment for families and younger visitors.
The baths are also an important part of Newcastle’s coastal heritage. The original swimming facilities opened in 1926, before the larger complex was developed during the 1930s. Its distinctive concrete terraces and geometric design reflect the era, giving the site a distinctive character that sets it apart from modern swimming facilities.
Unlike conventional swimming pools, the baths are exposed to the changing conditions of the Pacific. Waves can wash over the ocean-facing walls during larger swells, while the surrounding rock platforms and open coastal outlook make the setting particularly striking. Early mornings are especially popular with swimmers and photographers, with the rising sun illuminating the water and surrounding coastline.
