Sydney, get ready to hear the people sing. Les Misérables is coming to the Sydney Opera House for the first time in 2027, bringing one of the world’s most celebrated musicals to one of the city’s most iconic stages.
Opera Australia has announced that Cameron Mackintosh’s acclaimed production will open at the Joan Sutherland Theatre on 27 August 2027, marking the musical’s first Australian return in more than a decade.
Two global icons come together

Based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel, Les Misérables tells an epic story of love, sacrifice, revolution and the resilience of the human spirit. Its sweeping score features some of musical theatre’s most beloved songs, including I Dreamed a Dream, On My Own, Bring Him Home and One Day More.
The musical has captivated more than 150 million people across 57 countries and been translated into 22 languages. It has also earned more than 275 major awards worldwide and marked 40 years in London’s West End in 2025.
For producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh, bringing the production to the Sydney Opera House marks a long-awaited milestone. “To finally see it on the stage of the Sydney Opera House is something I have been dreaming of for years,” Mackintosh said.
The 2027 season also marks 40 years since Les Misérables first premiered in Australia in 1987, adding another chapter to the musical’s enduring local legacy.
Opera Australia’s Director of Opera, Amy Lane, described the production as “one of the defining musical theatre works of the modern era”, highlighting its extraordinary emotional power and ability to connect generations of audiences.
