Australia might not boast the extensive rail networks of Europe or India, but it still offers some truly unforgettable train journeys — like the legendary Ghan or the Indian Pacific. But if these luxurious train rides are a bit too ambitious for your pocket, there’s a more accessible option that delivers the same nostalgic charm of steam travel, without the hefty price tag. The Kiama Picnic Train is back this July and August, offering a stunning day trip from Sydney with seaside markets, famous national parks, and sparkling coastline views of the Pacific Ocean. Tickets are now available to book — here’s everything you need to know about the picturesque ride.
Kiama Picnic Train
Passengers aboard this vintage locomotive will travel through the Royal National Park and along the pristine coast of Kiama. Once you arrive in the famous small town, there’s no shortage of things to do, from watching the celebrated natural wonder of Kiama Blowhole in action and relaxing at the beach, to wandering the local markets or checking out the vibrant shops in town. Kiama’s stellar cafes and restaurants fill up quickly on weekends, so if you’re planning to eat out, it’s a good idea to book ahead.
The short but sweet train trip takes in sweeping ocean landscapes along the South Coast, with a few fun extras on board if you’re happy to spend a little more, including a First Class High Tea experience and a heritage saloon carriage with table seating for a true step back in time.
