When we heard the Horizon of Khufu experience was coming to Sydney, we were thrilled. This immersive VR expedition to Ancient Egypt has already received rave reviews from over 1 million explorers in cities like London, Paris, Atlanta and Montreal, so when our team got the chance to travel back thousands of years in time, we didn’t hesitate. After spending an afternoon inside one of the seven ancient wonders of the world, we can honestly say it’s one of the most awe-inspiring adventures we’ve had—without even leaving the city! Here’s a little sneak peak…
Groups can register for Horizon of Khufu with up to five members. Upon arriving, our group was greeted by friendly staff who guided us through a brief introduction to the experience. After a quick orientation, we were fitted with the VR gear, which included a high-tech headset (yes, the goggles fit over glasses!) and a backpack that allowed us to move freely. It was comfortable and surprisingly light, and once everything was set up, we were ready to begin our journey in this spectacular virtual space (where you can see your friends walking around!).
From the moment we put on the VR headsets, we were transported to ancient Egypt. The vivid detail and historical accuracy instantly made us feel like we were stepping back in time. The immersive 360-degree views and interactive elements made it feel like we were truly inside the Pyramid of Giza, exploring its hidden chambers and learning its secrets. Standing in the Queen’s Chamber, surrounded by ancient stonework, we felt a sense of awe that’s hard to describe. It was incredible to witness the scale and craftsmanship of the pyramid up close, something that no photo or textbook could ever capture. Another highlight was emerging from the pyramid to stand atop a cloud-brushing peak (warning—the VR is so impressive that you might experience some vertigo!). The realistic sound effects and stunning visuals made us forget we were standing in a room in Sydney—we were fully absorbed in the mystery and majesty of this ancient wonder.
What we also appreciated was the balance between entertainment and education. While the VR technology dazzles with its incredible realism, the experience doesn’t just focus on spectacle. The narration by our virtual guides added another layer of depth to the experience. Their knowledge and passion for ancient Egypt shone through every detail, making the entire journey feel authentic and educational. We learnt about the pyramid’s history, including the story behind the titular ‘Horizon of Khufu’ (the name given to the Great Pyramid), the ancient rites and rituals of the pharaohs, the myths of the Egyption gods and goddesses, and more. Even if you don’t consider yourself a history buff, the information is presented in such an engaging way that you’ll leave feeling like you’ve truly learned something valuable.
If you’re looking for something different to do in Sydney, we highly recommend giving Horizon of Khufu a try. We only wish the experience lasted longer—sessions are 45 minutes, and we were dying for more. Nevertheless, it’s a rare opportunity to explore one of the world’s greatest mysteries without boarding a plane. Whether you’re a fan of history, VR, or just curious about ancient Egypt, this experience will transport you to another world—one that you won’t soon forget.
