It seems the overall consensus is for Golden Gaytime to never change.
We love a Golden Gaytime here in the office. Some more than others, but everyone has their favourite ice cream come summertime so each to their own. (Featured image: James Cridland)
However, when we got wind that a petition was circling to rename the beloved Aussie icon to something else, and that the Aussie news cycle was gobbling up the story, we were all a bit miffed. Surely there are more pressing issues for the news media to keep on discussing and keep trending on Twitter.
Nonetheless, we’ve found some of the responses on Twitter to be highly entertaining as well as engaging. Others have been pretty damn funny while some more have been quite revealing.
Golden Gaytime as progressive
I like to think that golden gaytime ice creams are what partially convinced my family to vote in favour of same sex marriage thank u very much

… as a right-wing media plot
no, LGBT people do not want to change the name of Golden Gaytime. it’s obviously some weird scheme by the murdoch media to get rightwingers going on about cancel culture and snowflakes or some shit

… as a distraction
Dear media: not a single person in the LGBTQIA+ community wants to change the name of the Golden Gaytime. We love it, it’s a fun, camp name for a delicious treat. Stop stirring up hatred against us to deflect attention from the shambolic federal governments latest scandals.

… as a conversation starter
19 yo me: Hey mum, just going to the shop for a Gaytime
Mum: the ice cream or?
Me: 😵😵Golden Gaytime was my coming out story! Don’t ever change the damn name!

… as integral to Australian culture
I would still happily purchase/consume both those items if they were half as tasty as a Golden Gaytime. The word can still mean two things especially in Australia. Without our traditional owners, We don’t have much culture; let us have this.

… as a positive
I’m gay. This is fucking stupid. If anyone is genuinely offended over the name “Golden Gaytime,” then it is entirely unnecessary and illogical. It’s not intended to have nor does it have any negative connotations.

… as offensive
The only thing offensive about Golden Gaytime is this new version where they’ve added Cocopops 😳 pic.twitter.com/CMfZnSnge4

… as our next major export
Like I’ve never seen one in the UK but if I saw an ice cream called golden gaytime? Straight into my mouth
