We love our avo toast as much as the next millennial, but sometimes there’s a need to shake up the breakfast routine. So next time the Haas isn’t hitting quite like it should, consider trading it out for a combo of smokey charcoal chicken, pretty pink pickles and creamy garlic sauce. Oh, and swap that simple slice of sourdough while you’re at it and serve it up on a piece of kaki — a golden-brown, sesame pocket that’s a breakfast staple of the people who gave the world tabouli, falafel and hummus.
We’re going to hazard a guess and assume you’re not likely to pay a visit to the beautiful shores of Beirut anytime soon. But, if you’re keen to live like a Lebanese local, even just for a meal, the founders of Australia’s original Arab-inspired charcoal chicken, El Jannah, have got you covered with a brand-spanking-new breakfast menu that’s giving midnight kebabs at breakfast, but somehow works. And it’s not another drain on the deposit for your mortgage, either, with options to tuck into from just $6.90.
Need a little more convincing to break up with your bacon and eggs? Other kaki fillings you’ll find on El Jannah’s new AM menu include the Lamb Legend, packed with seasoned Middle Eastern lamb; the Fire Starter, featuring spicy sausage mince, mayo and iceberg lettuce; and the OG melt, a vego-friendly option of stringy halloumi and mozzarella that has no business tasting as good as it does. Alternatively, for the sweet-start-to-the-day kind of kids, the knafeh kaki — filled with sweet cheese drizzled with rosewater syrup — is set to become an instant classic. You can also level up with a kaki meal deal, which includes your choice of sandwich alongside scrambled eggs, a slice of fresh brioche, butter and jam.
The only catch to this Christmas-come-early announcement is that the menu is not currently available at all El Jannah outlets — for now, you can only collect your kaki at the brand’s Smithfield and Bankstown sites, but there are plans to potentially roll it out across other stores in the future.
And given El Jannah’s meteoric rise from a humble chook stop to a poultry powerhouse, we predict that the kaki may just start to rival buttery croissants as a breakfast option of champions in the next few months, so, watch this space.
The El Jannah breakfast menu is available daily from 6–10am. For more details and the full menu, head to the El Jannah website.
