Western Sydney‘s vast and varied network of walking and cycling trails is set to grow, with plans progressing for a major new riverside route through Parramatta. The City of Parramatta has endorsed the concept design for the third stage of the Duck River Nature Trail, bringing the long-term project another step closer to completion. The 4.5-kilometre trail will link the Parramatta River with the M4 Shared Path, creating a continuous corridor for walkers and cyclists while improving access to parks, open spaces and the Duck River foreshore. The next stage of the Duck River Nature Trail moves forward
The newly endorsed concept design follows community consultation carried out late last year and outlines a range of improvements for the eastern and western sides of Duck River. Stage 3 will deliver almost two kilometres of new shared pathways along the eastern foreshore between Canarvon Street and Blaxland Street in Silverwater, along with a shorter western section extending from the existing M4 pathway towards Camellia. The plans also include boardwalks, two new bridges, ecological planting and lighting in selected areas, with the aim to create safer and more accessible links while working around the river’s natural landscape.
Most of the trail will feature separate walking and cycling paths, alongside practical additions including seating, water bubblers, bike parking and repair stations. According to the City of Parramatta, the updated design reflects community feedback, with changes made to improve accessibility while reducing impacts on the surrounding environment. Construction timing for the western section is still being reviewed due to rising costs and changes affecting the planned Camellia connection, although the design and approvals process will continue. The broader $28.5 million project is expected to be delivered in stages through to 2028.
