Hospitality group, Plate It Forward, is back with a brand new venture. Offering a range of elevated street food and signature Mexican dishes, the new restaurant will be spearheaded by Head Chef and Mexico City native Roman Cortes. Like it’s sister venues — Colombo Social and Kabul Social, this vibrant new spot aims to give back through food. For every meal that is served at Coyoacan Social, a meal will be donated to the centre in Mexico City. The restaurant’s mission is inspired by Cortes’s own journey of overcoming addiction. The Mexican eatery will also work with local charities in South Eveleigh and Redfern to create a safe space for vulnerable people to share food, stories and a sense of community.

Coyoacán Social highlights the power of food to drive social change.
“We want our customers to be part of social change by having a meal,” says Plate It Forward co-founder Shaun Christie-David.
“That meal pays for a meal that we donate to people that are long-term unemployed or struggling to enter the job sector for reasons and barriers that we think shouldn’t exist.”
The team has created a vibrant menu to reflect their mission. Highlights include Birria tacos served with a delicious beef dipping broth, cochinita pibil which sees marinated pulled-pork tacos topped with pickled red onion and a choice of sauce, salad bowls, a customisable nachos menu and a variety of salsas and horchata and churros. Also on the menu is the Chicken Tinga with a smooth and smoky Chipotle favour, served in taqizas or on top of a tostada with fresh cream, cheese and lettuce.
“It replicates authentic Mexican recipes which have been kept in the family for generations,” Cortes said about the menu. The menu also pays homage to his mother Maru Navarro and the local cuisines from her birthplace, Coyoacán.
Conveniently located next to Lucky Kwong by restauranteur Kylie Kwong, and Matt Whiley’s sustainable bar Re., the Mexican joint will operate for lunch from 11am–3pm Monday–Friday, and for dinner from 6–9pm Friday–Saturday. Read more about the Plate It Forward in initiative here.
