Coldplay is finally set to perform live in Sydney this week but long before their arrival, the band captured some of the city’s magic on a casual stroll down King Street in Newtown. The band filmed the video for one of their most iconic songs, turning the colorful, quirky strip into an impromptu music video backdrop for A Sky Full of Stars. With the Coldplay Sydney concerts kicking off tonight, November 6, we thought it was the perfect time to revisit the band’s connection to the city before hearing the song live.
The video kicks off with a simple street performance and builds up to an all-out celebration. Some famous King Street landmarks and murals can be seen in the video which has since amassed a whopping 950 million views, including the popular Martin Luther King Jr. “I Have a Dream” mural, the lively, confetti-filled plaza outside the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre and a number of local cafes and bistros. The video also showcases a vibrant scene with 250 extras, bringing the street to life in true Coldplay style.
Sydney has made it to the big screen many other times. The city most recently took centrestage in movies like Anyone But You and The Fall Guy and classics like The Matrix and The Great Gatsby were also shot here.
If you’re heading to the concerts this week, why not stroll down the streets where A Sky Full of Stars was filmed? It’s a great way to get hyped up for the shows.
