Sydney’s summer of sport is getting another major addition, with the Australian PGA Championship set to return to the Harbour City for the first time in nearly three decades.
The 2026 BMW Australian PGA Championship will be held at The Lakes Golf Club from 26th–29th November 2026, marking the tournament’s first appearance in New South Wales since 1998.
It’s a notable homecoming for one of the country’s premier golf events—and for a course steeped in history.
A Historic Course Back In The Spotlight

Tucked just minutes from Sydney Airport, The Lakes is no stranger to big moments with the golf ball. The venue hosted the Australian Open as far back as 1964—famously won by Jack Nicklaus—and most recently welcomed the tournament again in 2023. Its last time hosting the PGA Championship, however, dates back to 1987.
Known for its tight fairways, water hazards and exposure to coastal winds, the course offers a proper championship test—one that should make for compelling viewing when the world’s best arrive in November.
A Boost For Aussie Sports Tourism

Organisers are expecting thousands of interstate and international visitors to descend on Sydney for the four-day event, with estimates suggesting around 15,000 attendees will travel to the city and inject more than $10 million into the local economy.
It’s the kind of sports tourism boost cities around the world are chasing. According to the World Economic Forum, sports-related travel now accounts for around 10 per cent of global tourism spending—and continues to outpace the wider industry.
What To Expect From The Tournament

Although officials have yet to announce the final player field, the Australian PGA Championship typically draws top talent from across the Australasian circuit and beyond, often featuring players with experience on the DP World Tour and other international stages.
The event is also expected to attract strong broadcast coverage, showcasing Sydney—and The Lakes—to a global audience across the tournament weekend. Organisers have yet to release ticketing details, but the late November timing, right on the cusp of summer, makes the event an easy addition to Sydney’s warm-weather social calendar.
Minister for Sport and Tourism Steve Kamper said the event’s return marks a major boost to Sydney’s sporting calendar, noting that the state has not hosted the tournament for nearly 30 years.
“We can’t wait to welcome some of the best golfers on the planet for the Australian PGA Championship in November at The Lakes,” he said. “It’s a huge moment for golf fans and a big boost for local tourism, with thousands of visitors expected to travel to Sydney for the event.”
PGA of Australia CEO Gavin Kirkman echoed the sentiment, pointing to Sydney’s track record of hosting world-class events and The Lakes’ long-standing connection to professional golf.
“The city is synonymous with major sporting events, and The Lakes has a rich history with our tour,” he said. “We’re looking forward to returning in November and delivering a great championship.”
A Packed 2026 Events Calendar
For Sydney, the PGA Championship slots into an already stacked 2026 sporting calendar. The city is gearing up to host everything from State of Origin clashes to the Sydney Super Cup featuring Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, alongside major fixtures like the Bledisloe Cup, NRL and NRLW Grand Finals, Bathurst 1000 and the Sydney Marathon World Major.
With a historic venue, a global audience and a prime spot on the sporting calendar, the Australian PGA Championship is shaping up as one of Sydney’s standout events this summer—whether you’re a golf lover or just in it for a day in the sun.
