After years of anticipation, one of the city’s most ambitious new projects is finally ready for its grand debut. Rising above the banks of the Parramatta River, a spectacular new museum is set to welcome its first visitors this weekend, promising a stellar mix of art, science, history and innovation. Powerhouse Parramatta officially opens on Saturday, November 7, claiming the title of NSW’s largest museum. With soaring ceilings, sweeping exhibition spaces and bold architectural design, the long-awaited attraction marks an exciting new chapter for Western Sydney. Here’s everything you need to know ahead of opening weekend.
What to expect at Powerhouse Parramatta

Five major exhibitions will welcome visitors to the new museum, spanning everything from space exploration and contemporary art to fashion, history and interactive experiences. Among the highlights is Es Devlin: The Turning, featuring five immersive installations by the acclaimed British artist, including Forest of Us, a stunning mirrored maze exploring the relationship between humans and nature. Families can step into The Dark, a playful exhibition pitched as an immersive space for “kids and their families” featuring an enchanted forest, crystal tunnel and a world of giants.
Task Eternal explores humanity’s fascination with space, bringing together a NASA Moon rock, historic aircraft and Leonardo da Vinci’s flying-machine drawings. Meanwhile, The Mall traces the evolution of shopping centres and consumer culture, while Overflow explores First Nations connections to waterways across NSW.
Beyond the galleries, a 23-day opening festival will feature more than 170 events and activities, including live performances, creative workshops, talks and food experiences.
